Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use Spec II as a base for my own mods?

A: Yes! You can find the adhoc source code for Spec II here, and you can use the GT Modding Hub to get started with modding.

Q: Where can I find xdelta?

A: xdelta UI can be found here.

Q: Why doesn't my patched disc open when xdelta completed without errors?

A: xdelta does not always preserve the extension of the original file. Go to the file it generated and simply add ".iso" to the output, without quotes, and it will be recognised as a disc image.

Q: Can I use my existing Gran Turismo 4 save?

A: The answer to this one depends on which version of GT4 you've been playing.

Retail GT4: Not compatible with GT4 Online, therefore not compatible with Spec II.

GT4 Online NTSC: Compatible with Spec II, although changes to event data may have side effects on prizes/event completion statistics. Should work, but not thoroughly tested, and a new save is still recommended.

GT4 Randomizer: As with GT4 Online NTSC, saves should be compatible with Spec II but may have some side effects.

Q: Why do I have a full garage and/or millions of credits?

A: You likely have a leftover saved game from unmodded Gran Turismo 4 Online that Spec II is loading. Try starting over with a fresh save - Spec II starts with 10,000cr. and no cars.

Q: What are the new prize cars?

A: The full list of non-randomised prize cars can be found here.

Q: Why don't the assist overrides affect licences/missions?

A: GT4's licence tests and missions are balanced around whichever assists they were originally designed to use. Removing these would make a lot of them far too easy, effectively making it work as a cheat. If you really want to remove the assists then you can do so with this PCSX2 cheat.

Q: Will the PAL soundtrack be added?

A: No, this would be distributing copyrighted music which is a risk I don't want to take.

Q: Why don't my emulator cheats work anymore?

A: Spec II makes comprehensive changes to the game's disc image and executable, which has resulted in it having a different CRC hash when played in an emulator. Simply rename your cheat file(s) so that they start with the new CRC hash for Spec II: 4CE521F2

Note: The cheats for 480p, GT3-style chase camera, and trigger sensitivity scaling are already built in to Spec II. Using the existing emulator cheats for these tweaks is no longer necessary.

Q: Do the game's own cheats still work?

A: Yes! In fact, Spec II even adds another cheat to quickly pass any Driving Mission! Due to the addition of the Quick Menu, the existing cheat combos have been changed to avoid using the SELECT button. You can view the new button combos at the "hidden" cheats page.

Q: Why does the handling feel different?

A: One of the changes Spec II makes is to set all road cars' stock tires to Road tires, rather than Sport Medium. This was done so that the early game is a little more challenging for seasoned players, and because myself and many others find the car handling to be more lively and interesting with less grippy tires. Sport Mediums can still be purchased and behave the same as before.

Q: Where are the LAN/Online modes?

A: Networked functionality has been disabled in Spec II as there is no reliable way to ensure that users attempting to play together are on identical versions of the game. This means that a Spec II player could join a lobby with an unmodded copy and potentially crash their game due to added/changed content, and I would rather avoid being the cause of potential lobby crashing issues for unmodded players.
